Become a Guardian! (February 2016)
Anyone fancy joining the Night Council? Here's your chance. In this post you can nominate your characters to become Guardians.
Summary
Every six months or so, the supernatural communities of London are invited to nominate potential Guardian candidates to join the Night Council. Guardian nominations are officially submitted on 5th February. The Council members then decide which nominations to accept and the initiation ceremony for new Guardians will take place on 12th February.
Nominations
Your character can be nominated as a Guardian if they meet the following criteria:
- Your character is an adult.
- Your character is level 2 or above, or they're at level 1 and you can move them up to level 2 at the next activity check.
- You have or will have three points to spend on joining a new faction at the next activity check.
- If your character is a member of the Redbright Institute, Circle Daybreak, Hillingdon Clan, Islington Nest or a werewolf in the East End Pack, they can sign up to be a Guardian and remain part of their home faction.
- If your character is a member of Circle Midnight, the Seelie/Unseelie Court or a non-werewolf in the East End Pack, they must renounce their faction when they join the Night Council.
Interested? Fill in the form below:
You have until 6th February 20:00 GMT to submit your character. ICly, these nominations will be submitted to the Night Council on 5th February. This will be hand-waved, and I will approve the nominations OOCly. As long as you meet the criteria above, you're pretty much guaranteed to be accepted – this is a request, not an application.
What does becoming a Guardian involve?
Becoming a Guardian puts characters in a slightly different position than with other factions because they will be expected to put their loyalty to the Night Council first, no matter what. At the same time, Guardians have more authority within their own factions, enforcing the law within their supernatural communities.
• First and foremost, they are essentially supernatural police. Guardians do not report crimes; crimes are reported to them and they should respond at once. They arrest suspects, carry out interrogations, imprison criminals and impose sentences. Unless it's a very serious crime that requires a hearing, they can do all this without seeking permission from higher up.
• Secondly, they play an important role in covering up supernatural events. It is the job of a Guardian to put a stop to anything that threatens the secrecy of the supernatural world.
• Finally, they act as security for the Night Council elite, guarding them at events, carrying out surveillance and making sure that their meeting rooms are secure. The most experienced and trusted Guardians act as personal bodyguards to the Night Council representatives themselves.
• Becoming a Guardian is not a pathway to becoming a Representative and thus joining the inner circle of the Night Council. Representatives are chosen by their factions, and are usually high-ranking members of their own community. Guardians have no particular advantage here.
• They can use any method they see fit to carry out their work, including methods that are against the law. "By any means necessary" is the slogan they live by.
• At level 3, Guardians can claim a one-time only mod-chosen reward. This will usually take the form of a unique power or special protection.
• This power comes with a price, however. When they join up, Guardians must sign an oath swearing their allegiance to the Night Council. This oath is not just a piece of paper: it magically binds them to their word. Guardians who break their oath are compelled to return to Westminster, at which point they will turn to stone. (They don't find this out until they've signed the document, and then they are forbidden to reveal it. The perils of not reading the fine print.)
What if I want to join the Night Council but in a different role?
This is always possible! There are two basic requirements to meet if you would like your character to join the Night Council: Firstly, you must have three activity points to spend on joining a new faction, and secondly, your character must be at level 2 or above in their current faction. If you meet the requirements and you have an idea for a role you'd like your character to play in the Night Council, please feel free to ask me about joining the faction. The Night Council employs a web of informants in the government, public sector and the media, so there are plenty of opportunities to be involved.
Next Steps
OOC Activity
• By 6th February 20:00 GMT: Nominate your character as a Guardian by filling in the form on this post. The new Guardians will be announced in the activity check results post.
IC Events
• 5th February: Characters will have submitted their Guardian nominations by this date. Now it's time to wait nervously for the results.
• 8th February: New Guardians will receive a letter of acceptance delivered by owl or crow. The letter will invite them to attend the initiation ceremony on 12th February. Feel free to have characters react to the news.
• 12th February: Guardian initiation ceremony*, taking place at Night Council Headquarters in Westminster. All the Night Council members will be there.
*There will be a mod-posted log for this event.
Please note: Plot will not be handed out to Guardians. As always, it is up to players to take initiative and make things happen within their respective roles. I am however always open to being approached. If you want to do something with Sylvia, let me know. If ever you're not sure about what your character could be doing in their new role or you want to run an idea past me, please feel free.

Well, he's a good background man, so cover-ups and/or intelligence are probably the directions that I'd like for him to go? It's basically what he does for Norrell as it is, spying for him and covering up his messes. I'm not sure what sort of title might encompass all of that, but I'd love for his role to be essentially that? Rather like he's broadening what he already does and just doing so for the entire Night Council as well as just Norrell.

GUARDIAN NOMINATIONS

Age: 32
Species: werewolf
Faction(s): Redbright Institute
Skills: trained soldier and spy, werewolf senses
Moral compass: Illya is trained to follow orders. Right now, his ultimate orders are to investigate London's supernatural climate, though the orders he states he's under are to serve the Night Council. He'll do what the Night Council asks of him, do it efficiently, and never (...well, hardly ever...) have moral qualms about it.

Age: 22
Species: Shapeshifter
Faction(s): Redbright
Skills: In addition to his abilities as a shapeshifter (even without being shifted he still has a very keen nose), Simon's very intelligent and a good scientist. I see him applying the scientific method to his role as a Guardian.
Moral compass: This is a bit trickier. Simon's basically a good person who has a strong sense of right and wrong. He believes in what is fair and just, and can be pretty self-sacrificing. Until recently, he wouldn't have considered violence as an option, but after his experiences in January he finds himself a lot more willing to do morally questionable things in the name of what he sees to be right.
