IE, to get a sense of magic that's been used in the area, and with that the place/people and animals that have been there. It's generally just like 'flash memory of an angry dog' or 'child crying, raised voices' type thing (assuming said child/creature etc has some magical element), rather than anything elaborate, but it's a fun thing to fuel detective-ing!
