The Night Council, Guardian Nominations & You
Anyone fancy joining the Night Council? In this post you will have the opportunity to choose your representatives on the Night Council and nominate your characters to become Guardians.
Summary
Every six months or so, the supernatural communities of London are invited to nominate potential Guardian candidates to join the Night Council. Guardian nominations are officially submitted on 1st August. The Council members then decide which nominations to accept and the initiation ceremony for new Guardians will take place on 8th August.
So how does this work OOCly? Well, first of all, you probably want to know who your character might be working for. Sylvia Redbright is the President of the Night Council, but who are the representatives? Good question. The answer is up to you.
Choose your Representatives
You may remember last month when we made up some NPC faction leaders, known as the Elites. Well, this month we're going to make up a few more: the Night Council representatives. All NPCs will be established characters i.e. they've been in their position for a number of years. Here's the list:
President: Sylvia Redbright, Witch
Vice President: OPEN, Witch
Witch Representative: OPEN, Witch
Vampire Representative: Millicent, Vampire
Shapeshifter/Meta Human Representative: OPEN, Meta Human or Shapeshifter
These NPCs are not designed to be played. This is about world building and establishing the status quo of the game. Why make up NPCs if they won't be played? Because it gives you the players the chance to decide what sort of character you want to represent your character's people. The personalities and beliefs of the NPCs will influence the overall direction of the game. It also gives you a target toeliminate gently dislodge in the future when your character gets ambitious.
To submit an NPC, fill in the form below:
Anyone can submit an idea! Feel free to discuss amongst yourselves. There are a few guidelines to follow, namely that the characters you submit should 1) be original characters; 2) match up with the game information about their factions; and 3) be consistent with the game information about their type. You have until 6th August 20:00 GMT+1 to submit your nominations.
The final roster of Representatives will be announced on the 8th, and with it a new game mechanic that will give your characters the opportunity to influence the Night Council Representatives and change your faction's prospects in the game. Tired of being discriminated against by the powers that be? This new mechanic will give you the opportunity to change that.
Become a Guardian
Still with me? Good. So how about becoming a Guardian. Your character can be nominated as a Guardian if they meet the following criteria:
- Your character is an adult.
- Your character is level 2 or above, or they're at level 1 and you can move them up to level 2 at the next activity check.
- You have or will have three points to spend on joining a new faction at the next activity check.
- If your character is a member of the Redbright Institute, Circle Daybreak, Hillingdon Clan, Islington Nest or a werewolf in the East End Pack, they can sign up to be a Guardian and remain part of their home faction.
- If your character is a member of Circle Midnight, the Seelie/Unseelie Court or a non-werewolf in the East End Pack, they must renounce their faction when they join the Night Council.
Interested? Fill in the form below:
You have until 6th August 20:00 GMT+1 to submit your character. ICly, these nominations will be submitted to the Night Council on 1st August. This will be hand-waved, and I will approve the nominations OOCly. As long as you meet the criteria above, you're pretty much guaranteed to be accepted – this is a request, not an application.
What does becoming a Guardian involve?
Becoming a Guardian puts characters in a slightly different position than with other factions because they will be expected to put their loyalty to the Night Council first, no matter what. At the same time, Guardians have more authority within their own factions, enforcing the law within their supernatural communities.
• First and foremost, they are essentially supernatural police. Guardians do not report crimes; crimes are reported to them and they should respond at once. They arrest suspects, carry out interrogations, imprison criminals and impose sentences. Unless it's a very serious crime that requires a hearing, they can do all this without seeking permission from higher up.
• Secondly, they play an important role in covering up supernatural events. It is the job of a Guardian to put a stop to anything that threatens the secrecy of the supernatural world.
• Finally, they act as security for the Night Council elite, guarding them at events, carrying out surveillance and making sure that their meeting rooms are secure. The most experienced and trusted Guardians act as personal bodyguards to the Night Council representatives themselves.
• Becoming a Guardian is not a pathway to becoming a Representative and thus joining the inner circle of the Night Council. Representatives are chosen by their factions, and are usually high-ranking members of their own community. Guardians have no particular advantage here.
• They can use any method they see fit to carry out their work, including methods that are against the law. "By any means necessary" is the slogan they live by.
• At level 3, Guardians can claim a one-time only mod-chosen reward. This will usually take the form of a unique power or special protection.
• This power comes with a price, however. When they join up, Guardians must sign an oath swearing their allegiance to the Night Council. This oath is not just a piece of paper: it magically binds them to their word. Guardians who break their oath are compelled to return to Westminster, at which point they will turn to stone. (They don't find this out until they've signed the document, and then they are forbidden to reveal it. The perils of not reading the fine print.)
What if I want to join the Night Council but in a different role?
This is always possible! There are two basic requirements to meet if you would like your character to join the Night Council: Firstly, you must have three activity points to spend on joining a new faction, and secondly, your character must be at level 2 or above in their current faction. If you meet the requirements and you have an idea for a role you'd like your character to play in the Night Council, please feel free to ask me about joining the faction. The Night Council employs a web of informants in the government, public sector and the media, so there are plenty of opportunities to be involved.

If ever you're not sure about what your character could be doing in their new role or you want to run an idea past me, please feel free.

We need to have these points ready by the end of the activity check yes? So by the 5th?
IE could I turn in my AC, then turn in enough points by the 5th later to qualify and sign then?
I am not 100% sure if I will manage it, so I wouldn't want to sign up before I definitely had enough points to hand!

Re: WITCH REPRESENTATIVE
Age: 52
Species: Witch
Faction(s): Night Council, also a high-ranking witch in Circle Daybreak.
Supports: Witches, Circle Daybreak, Night Council, Redbright Institute, Islington Nest (nominally)
Neutral: Ghosts, humans, meta humans
Against: Fae, shapeshifters, vampires, werewolves
Goals: Though privately disdainful and even prejudiced against almost all species except witches and "real" humans, Peter Vrinak has nevertheless risen through the ranks of the Night Council through his canny political sense and personal connections. He maintains an outward appearance of cordiality toward the Islington nest and is carefully polite to almost everyone he meets in public, but if the 'bloodsuckers and subhumans' all disappeared tomorrow, he wouldn't shed a tear. Believes in a London for humans -- in particular, for witches.
Notes: Allergic to werewolf fur.

Re: VICE PRESIDENT
Age: Mid 40s.
Species: Witch.
Faction(s): High Priestess for Circle Daybreak, member of the Night Council, and supporter of the Redbright Institute.
Supports: Witches of Daybreak (known)/both Circles (private), metahumans of all groups, and werewolves of the East End Pack.
Neutral: Ghosts since they don't really do anything in general.
Against: Fae and vampires since she believes them to be unruly at best and dangerous at worst. Those from Hillingdon Clan who aren't metahumans since they're more nuisance than help in her opinion.
Goals: Expanding Redbright safe zones in the north and Daybreak territories in the South. Hopes to establish more communication with the other supernatural communities outside of England to build support with and for them. Her goals basically focus on maintaining peace and cooperation.
Notes: Though she sides with her often and is a bit of a yes woman to her, she's hesitant of Sylvia Redbright's strong approach to dark magic and Circle Midnight due to seeing it as causing dangerous friction among witches who should help each other, not fight, but keeps these thoughts to herself. Considered the most lenient out of the Council.

Name: Lancelot Dulac (
Age: 33
Species: Meta Human
Faction(s): Circle Daybreak
Skills: Lancelot is a Police Community Support Officer! He's already trained to deal with criminals, to handle victims of crime, to investigate and question and to defend himself. Equally, he's a little sturdier and quicker than most people as a Meta Human raised in the Seelie court for 5 years! Also, he's very handsome and everyone knows employing handsome people makes you look good.
Moral compass: Lancelot would see himself as a champion of justice. He has a strong moral code, very much in favour of protecting the weak and fighting for freedom and justice etc etc, but equally he is not above bending the rules a little in favour of someone who needs it. He'd be reluctant to, say, fine a person with no money. Ultimately he wants to protect people.

Age: 36
Species: Shapeshifter.
Faction(s): Night Council and Redbright Institute (where she's the Department Head of Biology and specializes in Anatomy & Physiology).
Supports: Shapeshifters and metahumans in general. She supports witches publicly, but privately resents them.
Neutral:Ghosts, werewolves.
Against: Fae, vampires, witches in private.
Goals: Yasmine's goals are simple. First, to make London a safer place for all by restricting the privileges of the fae, vampires, and other unruly beings. Second, to end the reign of witches and make the Night Council a more inclusive faction. And if that means having a shapeshifter as president, well, Yasmine's happy to take on that role.
Notes: She can shapeshift into a panther, and retains the agility and stealth of a panther in her human form.

Name: Faolan O'Neill (
Age: 28
Species: Human
Faction(s): Hillingdon
Skills: Faolan is a Private Investigator who specializes in the supernatural. He's been a hunter for the past 10 years, having taken up his family's legacy upon their death. He may not be the strongest or the fastest, given that he is an ordinary human, but what he lacks in physical ability he makes up for mentally, and is very clever, excelling especially in strategy.
Moral compass: Faolan would take the appointment seriously, and even though he does have his own prejudices against particular brands of supernatural he would not let them get in the way of his assignment. His job as a PI and solving each case, fulfilling each mission as it were, is what he lives for, and this would be no different for him. He lives for a job well-done. He is not above bending the rules or doing whatever is necessary in order to get the job done. He is his own man with his own complex personal code, that is less black and white and rather more
